Afrontamentos (Affronts) is a collective project, where several artists will present works created around the matrix "Affronts".
Afrontamentos problematizes concepts such as intimacy or space. Space, as gallery or cultural space, which can be transformed by different artistic solutions, so as the public, which can be transformed, affronted.
It aims at versatility and continuity, therefore cross-cutting experiences from Northern to Southern Portugal, among the artists and their audience.

Casa-das-Artes/Palácio da Brejoeira (House-of-the Arts/ Brejoeira Palace) presents the I Meeting of Lusophone Writers, from 29 to 31 July, at Palácio da Brejoeira.
Novelists, musicians, poets, actors, directors, researchers, creators... people from different cultural and artistic clusters will reflect upon the Lusophone reality; upon new technologies and their relationship with literature and the Arts, as well as upon the alter mundi movements (environmentalism, entrepreneurship, antiwar, feminism, etc.), and the situation of the Arts in the contemporary world.
This project relies on the attendance of European, African and American noteworthy writers who express themselves through the Portuguese language.
Portugal, Galiza, Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Timor-Leste will be the dominions of our human and literary experience, while we aim at thinking about Lusophony in the anthropological sense of the word. This approach seems to be fundamental for the purpose of engendering rapprochement policies among the Portuguese speaking people and the all the peoples of the world, in light of the Lusophone countries' relatively narrow endeavour in exploring their rich linguistic and cultural differences.

MYSTERIES OF LISBON, Raul Ruiz’s masterful adaptation of the eponymous nineteenth-century Portuguese novel (by Camilo Castelo Branco) evokes the complex intertwined narratives of Victor Hugo and Charles Dickens. Mysteries of Lisbon plunges us into a whirlwind of adventures, coincidences, revelations, vengeance, betrayals and love affairs, wrapped in a rhapsodic voyage that takes us to Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and as far as Brazil. Evoking the complex intertwined narratives of Charles Dickens, the film’s central character is Joao, the illegitimate child of an ill-fated romance between two members of the aristocracy who are forbidden to marry, and follows Joao’s quest to discover the truth of his parentage.
Nothing, and nobody, is first as it/she/he appears in this intoxicating spiral of stories within stories within stories, filmed by Ruiz with gorgeous period design, a fluid, pirouetting camera, and a stellar French and Portuguese cast including up and coming actresses Clotilde Hesmé and Lea Seydoux.

Arte Institute supports: Sara Serpa - CD Release:Mobile
Mobile (Inner Circle) shows just how far vocalist-composer Sara Serpa has traveled as an artist in the few short years since she arrived in New York. After coming to the world’s attention as a member of Greg Osby’s group in 2008 and further establishing her credentials in duet with pianist Ran Blake on last year’s Camera Obscura, Serpa now sets off firmly on her own journey with a ravishing new release as the leader of a quintet featuring guitarist André Matos, keyboardist Kris Davis, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Ted Poor.
Inspired by the literature of travel and self-discovery, the far ranging album brilliantly showcases her remarkable abilities as an interpreter of lyrics, an improviser, an ensemble member, and composer. The versatility and originality that led All About Jazz to call her “the freshest vocalist on the scene at the moment” has never been more in evidence.

Arte Institute presents its Thanksgiving Concert with Sara Serpa and André Matos.
Vocalist Sara Serpa and guitarist André Matos have been performing in a duo setting since 2004. The music they create together has been taking many turns.
They use mostly songs, both originals and someone else ́s, to establish a moody ambient, sometimes using effects, other times completely acoustic.
They can be at once both contemplative and direct. Although not attached to style, they convey a avant-garde quality in their approach and a chamber like sound.
The balance between loose open forms and tight rhythms or unisons, creates efficient contrast through tension and release, and that ́s what makes this duo so appealing.
Don´t miss it!

3 x Beckett = … is the newest production from Propositário Azul – Associação Artística (Artistic Association).
Fate brought 3 actors together who share a like vision that is not unique among all artists. The vision is as common as that of Aeschylus when he had his first chorus stand in the Theatre of Dionysus to tell a story. A story simply told. The 3 actors we spoke of have that same timeless vision. But, unlike Aeschylus, who kept his work in his home town, we three want to venture into the world and share our story with all people in the world.
Most importantly, we share a simple love of Samuel Beckett' clear, sharp language and precision of imagery. Our 3 plays, COME AND GO, FOOTFALLS and NOT I embody our vision of direct presentation.
We will be performing at the Instituto Cervantes in New York, a recently restored landmark. Our performances will be 10, 11, 12 July 2012. Here we’ll be performing integrally in English.
This production will open in New York City, then Lisbon and later Barcelona. With actors and words as facilitators, we will be able to perform worldwide. We will also be able to use actresses in any country who share our vision in productions wherever we go.
For the opening we’ll have actresses from 3 different nationalities: Canadian (invited actress), Portuguese and Spanish.
To make this project possible we have the support of 3 organizations: Propositário Azul – Associação Cultural, Arte Institute (a non-profit organization that provides a space for inter-cultural inspiration and is a catalyst for an innovative artistic dialogue between the many communities in New York and the Portuguese artists) and the Instituto Cervantes in New York (one of its main goals is to encourage cultural activities in collaboration with other organizations). They’re a great help on providing us space to rehearse and present 3 x Beckett = … as well promoting it.

Description | Artist Statements
José Carlos Teixeira is an artist whose research-based work involves primarily video-essay, installation, and related photography. Three main axes shape his overall interdisciplinary practice: art and politics; art and community; art and technology. Is this a collision or a productive encounter?
Notions of identity, otherness, language, boundary, exile and displacement, are recurrent themes in his creative and theoretical investigation. Using strategies of individual and group performance, his pieces address specific issues related to locational identity (or identity as an ongoing process of transformation), global diaspora, the limits (or overlapping) of personal and social territories, and the definition of physical and psychological spaces. They attempt to generate not a set of conclusions, but a continuous process of questioning. Usually coming from a subjective, discursive and contextual approach, Teixeira focuses on collaboration, participation, and dialogue, therefore incorporating multiple voices and subjects into the audiovisual projects. The relationship with, and the representation of Otherness (both in its external and internal dimensions) occupy a central role in his aesthetic and ethic materializations.
Frontiers between video art and cinema, fiction and documentary, are purposely left open and undefined, following the belief that the most challenging and substantial artwork derives from in-between places, from areas resisting conventional categorizations.
Sarah FitzSimons is a visual artist whose project-based work typically involves a sculpture, installed outdoors or indoors, which interacts with and derives meaning from its surroundings. She interprets and reframes this process through photography, video, and storytelling, sometimes representing the images, video loops, and text as separate pieces. Much of the work seeks to connect our constructed culture and daily lives with the wider patterns of nature. FitzSimons works first and foremost in and with three-dimensional space, and a core question that drives her research is: how can an object affect the space around it? Just as the form and bulk of a mountain range creates its own weather, (rain forests and rain shadow deserts), how can and does art alter the space around it? (physical space, emotional space, aesthetic space, social space, metaphoric space, etc.) The sculptural objects she makes are rarely self-contained, meaning that they need context to be complete. When listing materials for works, she often include things like the Pacific Ocean, a small town in Vermont, a bedroom, and the Joshua Tree Desert, in addition to more typical materials of wood and steel. Both categories of ‘material’ (physical and site) are equally important in building the pieces.
Over the past decade and into the foreseeable future, her practice continues to explore the physical presence and power of mountains, rivers, deserts, and oceans, and their counterparts (just as massive) in the individual human psyche and collective unconscious.
